Advice from a Modern Faery

FEBRUARY IS FOR THE LOVE OF READING
Hello Booklin’s.  Yes, February is for Lovers…Lovers of Reading!  This month we LOVE Books about Friendship and some wonderful new books that we’ve chosen for BLACK HISTORY MONTH.   Below I’ve put together a list of book titles that are perfect for this month.

Our Secret Book Club beta testers will continue to gather Fridays in February for 1 hour story writing and brainstorming sessions at TreeHouse. A few more kids who live in the Ashland area are still welcome to join us. (We recommend this club experience for kids ages 11 and up, as we are testing our storytelling software using computers.)

BOOKS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP:
Friends, by Eric Carle for ages 4-8. This is a new sweet book about friendship by the author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A boy and girl are the best of friends, and when she moves away he travels far and wide to find her. At the end of the book, there is a photo of the author and his young friend.

Frog and Toad Storybook Treasury, by Arnold Lobel for ages 4-8. Here is the complete timeless collection of all four Frog and Toad books, newly bound in one sweetly-priced hardcover edition. We LOVE Frog & Toad!

Unlikely Loves: 43 Heartwarming True Stories from the Animal Kingdom for ages 10 and up (written for adults as well).  A sequel to Unlikely Friendships, here are more stories of real animal friendships, highlighting the compassionate relationships between them.

Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell for ages 13 and up.  If you liked Eleanor & Park (by the same author) you’ll LOVE this book, which is also about two college-aged misfits in love, but mostly it’s about a young woman writer finding her voice.

BOOKS ABOUT BLACK HISTORY:
Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans, written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson, for ages 6 to 10. This is a beautifully illustrated book, newly published in an excellent quality paperback edition (112 pages!).  The hardcover edition won the 2012 Coretta Scott King Author Award and Illustrator Honor, as well as 5 Starred Reviews.

Who Was Nelson Mandela? by Meg Belviso for ages 8-12. This new biography of Nelson Mandela is part of the very popular “Who Was / Who Is…” series.

Who Is Michelle Obama? by Megan Stine for ages 8-12. Another book in the “Who Was / Who Is…” series about our self-proclaimed “Mom In Chief.”

What Was the Underground Railroad? by Yona Zeldis McDonough for ages 8-12. From the “What Was” series, this history of the Underground Railroad includes real stories about people who escaped slavery and those that helped them.
