All about Winter Gløgg
With the changing of the weather and fall in the air, I can’t think of a better way to warm up than with a comforting cup of gløgg in my hands. What is gløgg, you ask? It is mulled wine, a warm beverage made with red wine, various spices and fruit. It can also be made non-alcoholic. Gløgg is the Norwegian name for the beverage, sometimes mispronounced as glug. As the years have passed, the purpose of mulling wine has evolved immensely. For example, spices used to be added simply to mask the flavors of a bad wine. Now, it is a way to incorporate unique flavors to a drinkable wine concocting a sweet and spicy beverage. Ingredients for gløgg include red wine, spices (such as cinnamon sticks, cardamom, cloves, and ginger), orange slices with rinds, and optionally, a stronger spirit like brandy. This wine cocktail is typically drunk during the cold fall and winter months, especially around Christmas.
Are you ready to make your own? Here is the only gløgg recipe you will ever need:
(Everything you need to make this recipe can be found at EdenVale Winery and Enoteca).
- 1 bottle of EdenVale’s Red Rabbit or Heritage Red wine
- 1 bottle of EdenVale’s Diamante Bianco
- 1 Wine Country Mulling Spices bag
- 1/2 bottle (12 oz.) of water
Optional:
- Cinnamon sticks
- Orange slices
- Cranberries
- Experiment with other fruit too!
In a crockpot or large pot on the stove, combine the above ingredients. Simmer the mixture, do not boil, for at least an hour. The longer, the better! Serve in a mug or festive goblet with orange peels or cinnamon sticks for garnish. Makes 5-6 servings. Cheers!
If you do not want to make your own, EdenVale’s winemaker, Ashley Campenella, has done the work for you! All you need to do is open the bottle, heat, and serve. It’s a delicious wine cocktail that has been affectionately called “Christmas in a cup!” by some of our customers. Come have a taste of our Winter Gløgg and see why we can barely keep it in stock!
