We just had an election of historical proportions here in the US. Maybe I’ll re-frame that and call it one of ‘herstorical’ proportions since it’s about us electing an unprecedented number of women to office all across the country. I’m all for it. The “boys club” has been at the helm since the birth of the nation and they seem to have become largely out of touch with the ideas of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. When it comes to matters of birth and life, its healthy nurturing women that are truly the most qualified leaders in the house and its high time that they get a seat at the table.
I see parallels to these changes when I look at the emerging role that alternative transportation in general, and electric bikes specifically, are playing on the national scene. The car has been king for almost a century now and under its rule we have pursued a growth model that we now see is clearly unsustainable and detrimental to the fabric of life.
Suburban sprawl keeps gobbling up precious land and resources. The insanity of paving paradise to put up a parking lot continues even today. The disconnect between our human constructs and the natural world is destroying the ecosystem that provides us with life. As we’ve spread out and away from more communal living situations a sense of isolation and disconnect from our fellow humans has reached epidemic proportions. The social intolerance and violent harm that we see escalating almost daily is sad evidence of this.
The good news is that things are changing for the better everyday as well. In the same election numerous programs were approved nationwide to bolster existing and create new infrastructure for human scaled activities – more trails, more bike paths, more public transportation systems. We are realizing that everybody is in this game together on this gleaming ball, hurling forward through space and time into an as yet unwritten future. Come ride with me into this field of hope and promise. Let’s reinvigorate our family of humanity and our precious world. Let’s do it now!
