ANPF Launches Fall Season with Student Spotlight 2009, Pairing Talented Youth with OSF Mentors for Four One-acts

Ashland New Plays Festival (ANPF) is excited to announce the launch of its 2009 season with a unique event: ANPF Student Spotlight 2009, on Monday, August 31, at 7 p.m. at Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Carpenter Hall. ANPF Student Spotlight is a collaborative project of ANPF and individuals from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), who have given their time and talent to mentor a student playwright, a novice director, and young adult actors and technical crew in a onetime theatrical production. Hosted by OSF veteran actor Richard Elmore, ANPF Student Spotlight 2009 comprises four one-act plays, including two new works: Thistles, written by award-winning student playwright Bella Pribyl, and Illyria, written specifically for the event by OSF alumna Rebecca Wood. The project includes a student director, high school and Southern Oregon University actors, and an Ashland High technical crew—all mentored by OSF professionals. “This is a logical extension for us,” says Student Spotlight producer and ANPF board member Elizabeth von Radics. “For more than 15 years, ANPF has been encourag-ing new plays by both new and established playwrights through its annual playwright competition. The Student Spotlight continues the focus on new plays while providing talented local theater students with the chance to work with OSF professionals—it’s a multigenerational celebration of theatre for art’s sake. We are also excited that two of the featured playwrights—Bella Pribyl and Rebecca Wood—will be in attendance.”

Oregon Shakespeare Festival mentors include Cristofer Jean, Liisa Ivary, G Valmont Thomas, David Weberg, Karl Alphonso, and Ben Cobb. The event is produced by Elizabeth von Radics and Amanda Berkeley, with support from the ANPF Board of Directors and community volunteers.

Student actors include Orion Bradshaw, Aurelia Grierson, Tim Homsley, Blaine Johnston, Kade Pike, Bella Pribyl, Tay Smith, and Mariko Oyama Thomas, with technical support from Rocky Garcia-Flores, Jacob Roe-Bauer, and Ellie von Radics. The four featured plays are: Thistles by Bella Pribyl, directed by G. Valmont Thomas; Illyria by Rebecca Wood, directed by Cristofer Jean; After You by Steven Dietz, directed by student director Clementine von Radics; and Post-Its (Notes on a Marriage) by Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman, directed by Liisa Ivary.

“The Student Spotlight will also help fill the coffers of the Ashland New Plays Festival so that it can resume its nationwide playwrights competition in 2010,” says Fred Wright, ANPF president. “This program serves to recognize and encourage fresh talent and provides Ashland audiences with some exceptionally exciting theatrical experiences. Other fundraising events are in the works. ANPF also seeks financial donations as well as volunteers for its all-important Play Selection Committee for our return to the traditional ANPF format next year.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. for a wine, cheese, and dessert mixer; curtain is at 7:30. It’s festival seating, and space is limited. To reserve a seat, please send your $15 (or more!) donation per seat to: ANPF Student Spotlight, PO Box 3314, Ashland, OR 97520. Please include your name(s) to be added to the guest list. This will be an evening of exciting theater as well as opportunities to mix with performers, playwrights, and the OSF professionals.
