Sangria Splashes into Summer

Reminiscent of warm Spanish nights, Southern Oregon celebrates its Mediterranean climate this summer with specially crafted Sangria wine from EdenVale Winery.  Sangria is a fruity drink made with red wine and fresh fruits, and typically requires drinkers to make their own recipe at home.  This year, EdenVale Winery brings bottled Sangria to Southern Oregon for the first time.

Sangria’s roots date far back into Europe’s enological history when people relied on alcohol to satisfy their thirst since water was full of bacteria and unsafe to drink.  The only liquids safe to drink were those containing alcohol due to its antimicrobial properties and wine made from fruit and berries became a popular beverage across the land.

Wine drinkers would add fruit, spices, and brandy to liven up their wine.  A common concoction was a red wine punch, made with claret as a base, known as Claret Cup Punch. Claret is a British term for a Bordeaux wine from Bordeaux, France.  Claret wines are made from a blend of Bordeaux grapes like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot.  Spain was no stranger to the red wine punch trend and named its version Sangria.

EdenVale has made Sangria every summer to sell by the glass and pitcher to guests in their winery tasting room at 2310 Voorhies Rd in Medford and at their wine bar and music venue EdenVale Enoteca at 17 N. Main St. in the downtown Ashland Plaza.  EdenVale’s winemaker Ashley Campenella decided to bottle this specialty wine after noticing a demand from guests wanting to bring the Sangria home to share with friends and family.

Rather than trying to recreate the Sangria found in the tasting rooms, consumers can now look to EdenVale’s bottled version for consistency and ease of preparation.  Since the fruit and wine are already blended together in the bottle, drinkers only need to splash it over ice and add a slice of orange for garnish.

Campenella suggests enjoying Sangria with your favorite Mexican dishes, grilled meats and spicy food.  Other serving suggestions include adding sparkling water or ginger ale, your favorite fresh fruit and a splash of brandy.

EdenVale’s Sangria is available in a unique package from Astropouch-a lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly pouch that holds two bottles of wines.  The glass free pouch makes EdenVale’s Sangria perfect for picnics, barbeques, camping, summer concerts at the Britt and trips to the lake or river.

Come by EdenVale Winery’s tasting room in Medford or EdenVale’s Enoteca in Ashland to try a sample of their Sangria and bring some home today.
