THE LION IN WINTER & SPOTLIGHT ON IRVING BERLIN

THE LION IN WINTER

October 15 – November 9

Starring Livia Genise and Don Matthews

Directed by Roy Von Rays, Jr.

The Lion in Winter is a tale of unrequited passion and lust for power as realized in the Oscar-winning film starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn. Talk about a dysfunctional family! King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey and John. Henry wants the kingdom to stay united after his death, but all three sons want to rule and so it is likely to be torn apart by revolutions. Henry favors the youngest, Eleanor favors the eldest, and the middle son hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top.

“A work of intelligence, astringent wit, and much theatrical skill.” ~ The New York Times

SPOTLIGHT ON IRVING BERLIN

November 13 – November 23

Starring Rose Passione and Erik Connolly

Directed by Presila Quinby

Script by Gail Wilson

Musical Direction and Arrangements by Brent Olstad

The story of Irving Berlin’s life and his impact on American music in the first half of the 20th Century would seem a fairy tale considering his family’s desperate persecution and flight from Russia. As a young immigrant trying to survive in the massively overcrowded New York City ghetto, he found he could sell more newspapers to passers-by if he sang, especially if he made up songs on the spot. From this humblest of beginnings rose one of the most prolific and celebrated songwriters of his day. From Alexander’s Ragtime Band in 1911 to White Christmas in 1942 and beyond, Irving Berlin told the American story. His most enduring and popular tunes are among the classics being offered by contemporary performers such as Diana Krall and Michael Bublé. Through the years, the world listened to Irving’s timeless music and we’re still listening!

Camelot’s Spotlight on Irving Berlin vocalists include Rose Passione and Erik Connolly. The red-hot, 4-piece combo accompanying them includes Brent Olstad on piano, Michael Vannice on woodwinds, Dave Miller on bass and Steve Sutfin on drums. This Spotlight includes 23 songs such as Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, Cheek to Cheek, Puttin’ on the Ritz and Easter Parade.
