X-Men Origins: Wolverine Movie Review

My boyfriend and I are major movieaholics and when we saw the previews for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we knew we would have to go see it since we had enjoyed watching all the other X-Men movies, not to mention the fact that the preview was awesome. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a movie that gives the audience a chance to learn about Wolverine’s unknown past. Now I have to admit I’ve never read the original comic books’ version of Wolverine and his back-story. So I can’t tell you how true the movie was to the comic books version of Wolverine and his past. However, I can tell you that if you liked the previous X-Men movies’ version of Wolverine (and you actually are interested in finding out this character’s personal history) then this is a movie you’ll enjoy.

Though this movie is primarily focused on Wolverine’s background and how he came to be involved with Stryker this movie also gives us the chance to meet some new mutants, both bad and good. One of the new comers that particularly stands out is the character Gambit. This character is portrayed by Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch, who appears to be relatively new to the movie scene. The character Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, is only on screen briefly but his portrayal of this character is very memorable and definitely left me wanting to see him on screen more. We also get the chance to be introduced to the disturbing character named simply weapon XI who is basically Stryker’s idea of the perfect soilder, with of course a variety of mutant DNA thrown in to make this creature more deadly to other mutants.

This is also a movie that any action lover can enjoy as well. There are of course lots of action sequences that involve everything from good old fisticuffs between Sabertooth and Wolverine to explosions of various vehicles and buildings. Overall the need for action  is defnitely quenched over the course of this movie. The stunt work and special effects help to make all of the action packed scenes eye-catching and keeps this movie from being strictly angst filled and an emotionally driven story line.

Overall I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I have to applaud Hugh Jackman who did an exceptional job of making this gruff, aloof character someone I could empathize with over the course of the film. I was also excited to see the character Gambit finally on screen. I hope that if they have additional X-Men movies that they find a way to include Gambit more because the little bit of screen time he had wasn’t enough for me. This movie is a nice balance between action, character angst and personal back-story. It gave me the chance to better understand what leads Wolverine to become the irreverent, maverick he is and pretty much lived up to my expectations and hopes as a movie goer.
