To Commemorate Human Rights Day, Local Citizens in Ashland, Oregon, Mobilize for Victims of Human Rights Violations
United Church of Christ, Ashland, Joins Engaged Citizens around the World in Global Write-a-thon
As part of a global week of action, the United Church of Christ, Ashland, will host an event to engage our local community to call on governments worldwide to protect and release victims of human rights abuses. The group will write letters on behalf of these prisoners, giving voice to their struggle and circumstances. This event is just one of thousands that will be carried out throughout the United States and over 50 countries worldwide.
“The actions of people in our community and thousands of others around the world will help bring freedom and justice to an individual being denied their basic human rights,” – Amnesty International has demonstrated the truth of these words over and over again.
Amnesty International’s Write for Rights – Global Write-a-thon commemorates the rights enshrined more than 60 years ago in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Every year, thousands of participants worldwide take action on behalf of prisoners of conscience and others at risk of human rights violations. This year, Amnesty International USA aims to have a Write for Rights event in every state and to generate 350,000 letters from the United States.
The Nov. 2010 release of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Laureate that had been under house arrest for the past two decades as a means of preventing her from engaging in a democratic political process in Myanmar, is an example of the importance of our clear focused attention on these significant issues.
Amnesty International welcomes members of the media to report on the Global Write-a-thon and the general public to join us in this event on Sunday, Dec. 12, 11:30am – 12:15 pm. You can find out more about the worldwide scope of the Global Write-a-thon at www.amnestyusa.org/writeathon.
