By Small and Simple Things, Are Great Things Brought to Pass…

Credit for the idea for this article goes to my sweet wife Emily.

At last glance, the population of Ashland is just slightly over 21,000. We have a vibrant little town that has been incredibly resilient this last year. As we come upon February, the month of love, Emily said, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if we all loved a little more this year?” Her idea was to develop a plan for everyone to perform 5 acts of kindness each month. Imagine the collective ability if we each dedicated to this goal. That means there would be over 100,000 acts of kindness per month! Which would then translate to over 1.25M acts of kindness for the year!!!

I’m impressed by her words because, if we can take the initiative to do just 5 things a month to brighten someone’s day, a monumental outpouring of love can occur. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the “the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” camp, or “You eat an elephant one bite at a time” group, big things usually only happen after consistent, dedicated, patient commitment to making them happen. If you’ve read many of my articles, you know I thrive on kindness.

Kindness is just the right way to treat someone. It’s not making some elaborate show or spectacle. It’s small, deliberate, and consistent. Take the time for those feelings in your heart to float to the surface. While reading this, you’ve probably already begun to think about someone you can show a little kindness to. In the words of Nike, “Just Do It!”

A wise ancient American prophet once wrote, “Now ye may suppose this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.” Let’s all commit to doing just a small 5 acts of kindness for the next year, and together we can build a mountain of love in our little town.
