People of the Earth Foundation, a Grass Roots Organization will present the 14th Annual Native American Arts Festival and Mothers Day Pow-Wow. Which are held each year in the beautiful Riverside Park, in Grants Pass, Oregon. Part of the “Amazing May” celebration, this event is to gain encouragement of the Native Visual, Performing and Cultural Arts. Featuring singing, dance exhibitions and hand drum contest. Carla Gonzales, will be the Master of Ceremonies throughout both days. Beginning May 10th and 11th at 10am through 7pm each day, this is one of the biggest Native American Gatherings in Southern Oregon. The gathering is made up of Native People’s from many different tribes, who come together to share their traditions with each other and the community. Some of these traditions include: dance, music, education, arts and crafts.
Each year we try and bring you something new to enjoy and watch. Invited guest will be the Fiesta America’s 4-H Dance Club appearing at 4pm each day. Jack Falls-Rock, Founder of People of the Earth, and Marie (Quita) Flores, the Primary 4-H Leader/Dance instructor of Fiesta America’s, have been working with the 4-H club members to learn Native American dances and the dances of the Indigenous tribes of Mexico. Along with the dances the club has also learned of the customs and history of Natives of both countries. The Fiesta America’s 4-H club will be presenting some Native American dances and Aztec Indian dance from the region of District Federal, Mexico and Sacred Deer Dance of the Yaqui, tribe from Sonora, Mexico.
Also an array of arts and craft booths, Tamia Handcrafts one of the booths that will be set up selling crafts. Fantasy Face Painting, for all the kids and of course the adults too.
Buffalo Burgers, Taquitos, Indian Tacos, Fry Bread, and Strawberry Shortcake are just a few items that will be prepared by Coyote Kitchen. Da Kine Grinds will also be serving food.
Tracie Sage, will do an educational presentation on natural, herbal medicines commonly used in this area on Sunday at 2pm. Mountain Remedies, is the name of the booth where, Christy Gunther, a herbalist will be set up the entire weekend to share information and products on natural cures.
Living Earth Circle will facilitate the special Honoring of Mothers on Sunday at 3pm. Free flowers are also being given out during this time.
Please come and support this free public event for the whole family. Volunteer’s and information call, 541-472-0215 or e-mail;
