Derek, thanks so much for taking the time to speak with me today. How have you been?

I have been doing well! The past couple of years have been challenging for everyone. However, I am still optimistic about life and our future.

Derek, to begin with, can you please give us an overview of your services?

My services include:

• Syncing Information and Devices

• Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

• Computer and Device Setup

• Network Setup and Support

• Technology Education

• Viruses and Malware Removal

• Hardware Installation and Upgrades

Mac or PC? Is this really a question we need to still be asking ourselves?

I will always advocate for Macs as they are a much more reliable platform. Windows makes sense in certain situations, like when you are budget-conscious or want to explore playing video games, but it can also be an incredibly insecure operating system.

Derek, what are the top features you appreciate about Macs the most?

Macs are a lot more user-friendly and enjoyable to use. They have much better security and require less maintenance to keep them running well. It’s true they cost more than Windows-based PCs. However, they are well worth it in my opinion.

Let’s talk networking and security. What are some of your best recommendations?

For security I recommend using Malwarebytes. It’s compatible with both macOS and Windows and is a solid anti-malware product. Mac users don’t need any additional security products. Windows users are recommended to also use anti-virus software, such as ESET NOD32 or Avast.

For networking I recommend using “mesh routers” if you need better WiFi coverage in your home or business. In the past, ‘extenders’ or ‘boosters’ were used to fulfill this need. However, they were often unreliable and would stop working unexpectedly. Mesh routers are able to handle this responsibility without any issues.

Derek, what advice do you find yourself offering time and time again?

Always backup your data! This will make a huge difference in the amount of time that it will take to get your devices back up and running should your technology ever fail.

I also recommend investing in a “battery backup” (also known as ‘uninterruptible power supply’) to protect your devices from electrical fluctuations which can damage hard drives and sensitive components.

Derek, what do you enjoy most in working with your clients?

Everyone has been so friendly and awesome to work with. I am so grateful to work with such amazing people and love tackling the unique issues that they present to me. I especially enjoy the more complex and challenging projects as they help me discover new solutions.

Please share some recent success stories with us.

A local restaurant had recently remodeled their location and their technology had been removed so that they could work more effectively. I was asked to come in on the last day to reconnect it all and ensure everything was operational for their opening later that evening. There was a time-sensitive element to this project and there were some technical complications. However, everything came together well and I was able to meet their deadline.

Derek, what are some of the most interesting and complex client situations you have faced?

A server belonging to a local law office had crashed over a Labor Day weekend and they needed its replacement installed and set up so that everything was operational by Monday. It was a technically complex project and there were a lot of details to address. It felt good ensuring everything was working correctly and that they experienced a minimal amount of downtime.

Moving into the future, what are you enjoying most about new technologies that will directly affect our lives?

I’m loving how technology enables us to easily connect with each other and how information is much more accessible. I see us depending on energy sources that are more reliable and cleaner as well. Plus visiting other planets sounds pretty cool too!

Derek, with hundreds of passwords to manage, what do you recommend?

There isn’t a super awesome product that works well for everyone. Password managers each have their own strengths and drawbacks. But I can share names of some well-rated products to help one get started: 1Password, mSecure, LastPass, Dashlane, and OneSafe.

These products store your passwords in the “cloud” so that they all are synced between multiple devices and will remain safe and accessible even if your device is lost.

Derek, what qualities of yourself do you find your clients most enjoying?

I’m a very determined person and can find the solution to pretty much any kind of issue. I can also explain complicated things in a very easy to understand way. I’m also told that I have a lot of patience.

Finally, what is your best advice for having a balanced and successful life with technology?

Put down your technology every now and then. Go outside and be in nature, even if it’s just for a walk in the park. Your technology will be there for you when you return. It’s important to break away every now and then. Otherwise a kind of cellular dissonance or imbalance can occur, and nobody wants that!

Derek, outside of work what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy volleyball, laser tag, exercising, and video games. I’m kind of hooked on ARK Survival Evolved right now.

Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us today. What is the best way for readers to reach out and work with you?

It’s best to contact me by phone call and text messages. I can also be reached through email, although I may take longer to respond.
