Forty-Five Years in the Rogue Valley

Steve Asher began building homes in Ashland in 1977 and since then has built or remodeled over 1,000 homes around the Rogue Valley. During that time he has built a reputation as one of Southern Oregon’s premier custom builders. Specializing in custom homes, historic remodels, and energy-efficient designs and technologies, Asher Homes has become known for working with clients to create personalized spaces that match the preferences, values, and lifestyles of the people who will live in them.

With Steve now transitioning into more of a design role within the company and looking toward retirement, he has been working on preparing Asher Homes for the next generation. In 2018, he brought on long-time Ashland resident, Dustin Brown, as the managing partner of Asher Homes. Dustin will build on Steve’s legacy and continue to create beautiful homes under the Asher name with the same enduring quality and commitment to sustainable building practices.

Dustin grew up in Ashland, starting Kindergarten at Bellview Elementary School and going all the way through the Ashland schools before obtaining a degree in business management from San Diego State University.  Although he grew up in the construction industry, spending his high school summers working in his dad’s cabinet shop, his original plan was to explore a different path. Building must be in his DNA though because his first job out of college had him overseeing the construction of large tracts of homes in Phoenix, Arizona for a Fortune 200 construction company. The work was fast-paced and grueling but it was an excellent opportunity to learn about efficiency in the homebuilding process and how to work closely with homeowners to achieve the best outcomes.

Wanting to get out of the desert heat and back to the beautiful valley he grew up in, Dustin eventually brought his family back to Ashland. He was ready to step out of high-volume home building in favor of working with individual homeowners in a more sustainable fashion. Back here in the Rogue Valley, he has continued honing his craft with an emphasis on new homes and remodels that exceed the energy standards required by the state and local municipalities.

After five years working alongside Steve and overseeing dozens of projects, Dustin is now preparing to take the reins and continue Asher Homes’ commitment to building beautiful, functional homes that add to the charm of our community and make wise use of our resources.

When asked about the transition, Steve said, “From the beginning, I’ve always wanted to build beautiful, high-quality homes, but even more importantly, to operate in a way that my clients understand and are comfortable with the process. Dustin has that same commitment to our clients and has my full confidence as he carries the business through the next several decades.”

Dustin says he’s grateful for Steve’s mentorship and is excited about the new challenge. “I love nothing more than delighting our clients as we bring their visions to life. I have especially loved working with Steve’s model of financial transparency and providing high levels of education to our clients throughout the construction process. We find that the trust it builds with our clients makes projects go faster and more smoothly.”
