Looking Ahead to Fall

It’s hard to believe that cooler days and nights will soon be here. Fall is coming and there’s lots to do in your garden spaces. Having enjoyed a beautiful and hopefully bountiful summer garden season, September is the start of fall clean up and planting. I look forward to this time of year just like spring; fall is a time of renewal and growth.

Starting your fall clean up should include keeping fall bloomers such as Asters, Coral Bells, Perennial Hibiscus and flowering Sedums well-watered from the base of the plant to prevent powdery mildew. Pruning and removing plants that have run their course will keep your garden and containers looking fresh and also make room for some fall annuals for a pop of color. Keep in mind that some perennials enjoy a revival with the cooler weather so be sure to do a bit of research before you cut them back. Leaving ornamental grasses to prune back in spring will keep their “crown” protected through winter and provide shelter for critters that might winter over in your garden.

Fall is the perfect time to plant perennials for an amazing show come spring. Certain perennials such as Asters, Yarrow, Erysimum, Gaillardia, and Monarda, to name a few, are blooming now and are available here at Ashland Greenhouses. Adding colorful fall ornamentals such as Mums, Flowering Cabbages, and Millet can help transition the look of your garden spaces and containers to a more fall aesthetic.

As my summer annuals lose their luster, I love to fill those spaces with our beautiful fall Pansies and Violas. Both are super hardy and typically carry me through winter and into spring with bright cheerful colors. At Ashland Greenhouses we carry a variety of fun metal garden art that can add a touch of whimsical fun, color, and movement to your garden as well.
