What Fuels Our Dreams After Despair?

Hope. It is the spark that keeps us going, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart. It is the invisible force that fuels our spirit, even when the world tells us to give up.

When my father lay dying in the hospital, the doctors told us there was no chance of survival. After six weeks of watching him drift in and out of consciousness, they urged us to prepare for the inevitable. I wanted to tell him it was okay to let go, but I hesitated—I didn’t want to take away his hope.

In hindsight, it wasn’t his hope I feared extinguishing; it was my own. Despite the dire circumstances, a small part of me clung to hope, and that wasn’t a bad thing.

Hope is a quiet yet powerful motivator. It’s what kept people alive in concentration camps, what inspires individuals to stand for change, and what fuels the dreams of students, entrepreneurs, and expectant parents. Hope persists in the face of disaster, giving us the strength to move forward.

Hope isn’t about certainty or guarantees. It’s the act of wanting something deeply while surrendering to the unknown. Even when we tell ourselves it doesn’t matter, hope remains. It’s innate, tied to our potential and capacity for joy. Without it, life feels flat and uninspired.

Fear often keeps us from hoping. Fear of disappointment, failure, or rejection can lead us to suppress our desires. Yet, denying hope is exhausting, draining us emotionally and spiritually. When we disconnect from hope, life loses its vitality. For some, that disconnect can feel unbearable.

But the opposite of hope is disappointment. Disappointment stings, but it’s temporary. Even in a child’s tears over missed ice cream, there’s hope waiting to emerge again. That resilience is the foundation of joy, growth, and discovery.

If we let fear of disappointment stop us from hoping, we live only half a life. A world without hope is a world without curiosity, adventure, or beauty. When we suppress hope, we lose sight of what makes life meaningful.

I’ve been there—stuck in fear, disconnected from hope. When I chose to embrace hope again, the world came alive with color. Did I always get what I hoped for? No. But the act of hoping itself brought energy, joy, and possibility. People often hear my story and comment on my courage and resiliency. But I know it is my hope that keeps me coming back, no matter what.
