Happy New Year
Happy New Year! Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023. We are so excited to start another fun season here at Ashland Greenhouses. We have been planting thousands of perennials since October. A bunch will be ready for planting as soon as we open after our winter break on January 11th. Beginning the first week of January we start transplanting thousands of little plants each week, with each week getting busier and busier. January can be a tricky month determining what to plant because we are still in the grips of winter weather. We have some great plants that can stay inside for now and go outside once the weather warms up.
A cheerful and colorful favorite is Cyclamen. Its prolific flowering and hardiness contribute to its popularity. It should stay inside in a sunny spot until April or May. At this point it can be moved outside to a shaded spot. Cyclamen can be tricky when it comes to watering. Treat them like succulents and water only when needed. Also be careful not to fertilize them too much, once a month is plenty.
Speaking of succulents… we have a huge variety available right now! Our succulents should be kept indoors this time of year, as they do not like the cold. They can be put outside in the warmer months. Succulents are a fun and easy plant to grow. There are so many different varieties to choose from and plant in cute funky containers.
Another early planting option are primroses. Primroses are early bloomers, love this cool weather and add a joyful pop of color to your spring garden. They do well in containers as well as planted directly in the ground. They prefer sun/part shade with well-draining soil.
On January 10th we will open for our regular winter hours. Stop by and visit us weekdays from 9am-4pm. It is exciting to see the greenhouses fill up with plants, so be sure to stop by and see what’s new. You can also check our availability list on our website www.ashlandgreenhouses.com. We will be updating our availability list every week, adding more and more plants to choose from.
