June Gardening – Enjoying the last few weeks of spring
Even though May has slipped away… we still have a little time to get our vegetable gardens planted and enjoy watching them grow. June is a great time to spruce up your flower beds & patio planters with annuals & perennials that flower all summer. The weather is still mild… the plants love it and so do we. Be sure to prepare your flower beds with our favorite brand of “Bumper Crop Soil Builder.” The highest quality Natural & Organic-certified soil amendment. If you have not tried Bumper Crop… you should… you’ll love it.
All of our Japanese Maples have leafed out and dressed to kill… or at least until fall colors appear. Now’s a perfect time to select your favorite. The colors, textures and style are out of this world and we have a great selection… 50+ varieties you probably won’t see anywhere else.
You may have heard that Japanese Maples won’t grow in full sun in the Rogue Valley. My 46 years of experience suggests otherwise. With proper planting and care you can plant most varieties of Japanese Maples in full sun. Here’s how… be sure to plant new trees with our “Bumper Crop Soil Builder” and “Bumper Crop” Azalea acid plant food. The most important thing to remember is to keep the soil surface mulched or plant low groundcovers to help keep the soil moist through the hot summer months of July, August & September. This keeps the humidity up and the root zone cooler. Japanese Maples are not drought-tolerant, so summer moisture is crucial. Good drainage is also important, so plant on slopes or mounds above existing grade. I tell everyone that “It’s all about the roots, not the sun.” Here are the primary groups and their unique characteristics.
Acer palmatum – Upright form: These trees vary in size from 6-20 ft in 15 years. They usually have larger lobed green, burgundy or golden leaves, but some can also be very lacey. It’s hard to imagine 100’s of varieties with different combinations of foliage colors, bark color, leaf shape, textures and growth habit. That’s why we collect new varieties every year and currently have more than 50 varieties in stock. Common varieties are Bloodgood, Emperor-1, Sango Kaku and Seriyu. Just to name a few.
Acer dissectum – Weeping form: These are typically very lacey leaves with burgundy or green shades of foliage and grow slowly to 6-12’ tall in 15 years depending on the variety. Some have the classic rounded form, while others can be irregular and uniquely shaped. Fall colors of unbelievable orange-red to golden-yellow… are just another reason for their popularity. Common varieties are Red Dragon, Tamukeyama, Crimson Queen, Virdis and many more.
