Intro to Classical Realist Oil Painting
with Sarah Burns
January 22 & 23 Saturday 10-5 & Sunday 1-5

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 1/14
Using still life painting as an introduction to working with oil paints, the workshop begins with a demonstration and lecture and moves into hands-on instruction time with students receiving instruction as needed. This class will cover essential information about the physical properties of oil paint, as well as the elements of drawing, value and color. Students will leave informed and ready for future oil painting.

Oil-Based Monoprinting
with Denise Kester
January 29 & 30 Saturday & Sunday 9am-4pm

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 1/21 This workshop will explore the possibilities of monoprinting, learning techniques in viscosity printing with oil-based lithography inks. Students will be exposed to the possibilities of this medium, and encouraged to explore and create. This class will be held off-site at the beautiful private studio of artist Denise Kester in Ashland. The class size will be limited to provide an intimate experience with lots of one-on-one instruction. Previous printmaking experience helpful, but not required.

Bookbinding
with Sabina Nies

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 1/25 Paste papers are an essential element to making unique handmade books. Friday night students will receive instruction on the creation of paste papers and will make several colorful paste papers with intricate patterns. Saturday students will learn the art of Coptic Bookbinding, an ancient Ethiopian technique. Students will learn to make a beautifully bound book with wooden boards and leather lacings. This method results in a open-spine structure well suited to becoming a journal or sketchbook because it can open completely flat. With these two essentials, students will be armed with the knowledge to create original books.

Watercolor Basics

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 2/1 A perfect workshop to get off to a great start with watercolor, and develop a solid understanding of this medium. Participants will learn the basic techniques for making washes and color blending.
Students will learn effective texturing techniques, and how to mix colors to achieve harmony. Judy Morris, a master watercolorist, has prepared a series of exercises to easily guide students through the learning process and become adept in watercolor in order to achieve their goals and produce paintings to be proud of.

Anatomy for Artists: The Male Form

This intensive life drawing workshop is designed to sensitize the artist to the underlying anatomical form of the male figure, with the goal of increasing accuracy of perception. We will utilize a live male model to learn the various muscles and bones and for drawing anatomical structures apparent on the surface of the body. Guided drawing techniques and exercises will enhance the students ability to understand and illustrate what is seen on the male form. (Model Patrick Frey is a local Certified Conditioning and Strength Specialist, competitive runner, fitness educator and bodybuilder who has been involved in fitness for more than 35 years.) Previous drawing experience required.

Encaustic: Working with Transparency

This workshop will begin with the basics of working with encaustic (wax medium) emphasizing safety and technique, and then move into instruction on pouring wax, various substrates, drawing in order to create layers, and working with wax to fully utilize it’s transparent qualities. Graphite and Gesso on Panel

March 5 Saturday 1-5 pm

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 2/21
Explore various drawing techniques using graphite and gesso on panel. Through demonstrations and practice, students will learn to ready a panel in preparation for creating images in graphite using brushes, pencils, erasers, and other drawing media. The class will conclude with a demonstration of how to incorporate color washes over the gesso. Basic drawing skills required.

Precious Metal Clay Jewelry
with Kirsten Bakke
March 12 Saturday 1-5 pm
$105 members / $125 non-members (includes materials)
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 3/1
This workshop will introduce students to PMC (precious metal clay) which is an exciting material as malleable and workable as clay, but fires to create fine silver often used to create jewelry.
Participants will work with PMC to design and create a pendant or earrings in order to learn the techniques and explore the versatility of working with PMC.

Monotypes & Chine Collé
with Nancy Jo Mullen
March 19,20 & 26,27 Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 3/4
Expand your knowledge of monotype processes. Learn to successfully combine 3-4 plates to create a single image. Students will have the opportunity to work in large format and learn to incorporate chine collé into their monotypes. This class will be held off-site in the beautiful home studio of Nancy Jo Mullen. Class size will be limited to allow plenty of press-time and one-on-one instruction.
Previous monotype experience required.
