Marching into Spring

Spring is just around the corner, and we are all very excited to get into our yards and gardens. At Ashland Greenhouses, we are working hard getting a wide variety of annuals and perennials ready for you!

Now is a great time to start some of our cool-weather veggies. We have a great selection of lettuces, broccoli, cabbages, brussels sprouts, onions and more! You can check our availability list on our website to see all the varieties currently on hand. We are lucky, here in southern Oregon, that we get the opportunity to have two growing seasons for these cool-weather veggies! So come on down and pick some up, so you can start eating fresh, home-grown produce before you know it.

Seeds have arrived! Stop by to check out what you can start growing right away. We have so many to choose from, from asparagus and beans to wildflowers mixes and nasturtiums. I’m particularly excited about the watermelon radishes and the wide variety of sunflowers to choose from.

Let’s talk about frost! Here in Ashland, we are sitting at US Hardiness Zone 7. For Zone 7, our last freeze date is typically known as April 15th, but we can still get periodic frosts for up to a month after that. This date can vary from year to year, so it’s always wise to keep an eye on the current weather trends.

Pansies and violas (which are ready right now) are famously wonderful for this time of year. They can handle very cold temperatures and provide fantastic color early on. We have our pansies and violas outside right now, so feel free to plant them right in the ground (or a cute container) as soon as you want. They will typically bloom until summertime. These flowers struggle in high temperatures, but thrive in cooler and warm environments! Did you know that we have thirty color varieties of pansies? That is not including our beautiful wave pansies that are great for baskets and bowls. Thirty colors! The possibilities are seemingly endless. Also, did you know that pansies are edible? You can toss them in a fresh salad, candy them, or even press them into fresh baked sugar cookies.

Most of the perennials we have available right now are strong enough to be planted outside. Some popular plants that people have recently been drawn to include campanula, aubrieta, arabis, and erysimum!

New plants are being added to our inventory every week, so come visit us often to see all that we have to offer.
