Wintering

The next couple of months I generally spend my time doing what I know as “wintering.” It’s when I rest, as my gardens rest. As I wait patiently for spring, I browse seed catalogs, plan my raised beds, and get my garden shed back in order. Spring is such a busy time for us gardeners that the cold winter months are perfect for gathering your garden notes, organizing your supplies, and taking stock of your fertilizers and pest control options.

January is the month to plan all your gardens for the coming season. You can start sowing early vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, and parsley, and direct seeding your peas as early as January if the soil conditions permit. This month and February are great for gathering that excitement for the coming season and strengthening your body for the weed pulling, shoveling …all the labors of love that spring demands.

As you wait for warm sunshine and longer days to arrive, remember that Ashland Greenhouses retail store will reopen on January 7th after our holiday break. We will have beautiful Cyclamen in lovely Valentine’s shades of pink, white, red, and fuchsia. We also carry a large selection of tender Succulents that are easy to grow indoors, as well as fragrant colorful Primroses for a pop of bright color. We’ll be offering the start of our culinary herbs and early season perennials with more being added each week as they grow to size. We are a great place for gifts for gardeners in your life. Our fun garden metal art includes some beautiful spinners, fairies, mushrooms and more. Purchase a gift card, add a beautiful cyclamen or primrose, one of our gorgeous watering cans, and you have the start to a perfect gift!

It’s that time of year for us to start our seasonal hiring. If you have always wanted to work at the Greenhouses, or if you’re a garden lover looking to learn, work hard, and have fun please find our application on our website www.ashlandgreenhouses.com or look for our job postings on Indeed.
