April is one of our busiest months in the greenhouses. Production and planting are at their peak and by mid-to-late April, each greenhouse is filled to max capacity. We often tell people it is the best month of the entire year to come out and see all the color. Almost every plant is blooming and within a few weeks will quickly start to disappear.
The greenhouse which holds the bulk of our geraniums (over 10,000) and mixed hanging baskets is one of my favorite houses. I think it is the best area to get ideas and inspiration. When you look up at the hundreds of mixed basket variations, you’ll notice that each basket has either a Sun, Part Shade, or Shade tag on its hanger. By examining the baskets you can get great ideas on plant combinations for your own sun, part shade, or shade areas. Many times customers are overwhelmed at the quantity of plant selections and choices. I often tell them to look at the mixed baskets and search for plant and color combos they like and go from there.
In the center of our store greenhouses we try to accommodate the bulk of our shade plants. So if you know you need plants for shade we have a large section of space dedicated to shade lovers. The baskets hanging above are all fuchsias. This year we have close to 20 varieties of fuchsias and a total of 1000 fuchsia baskets. Even if you don’t have a shady area to plant in, it’s worth viewing.
Each season the Ashland Greenhouse community of customers, friends, and employees continues to grow. This is the time of year we get to see so many new and familiar faces. What I love about spring is getting a chance to visit and catch up with old friends. From now until the end of May, there isn’t a day that goes by where I won’t be able to walk through the store and see someone I know. It’s a large part of what makes this time of year so great.
