From the Greenhouse – A New Year with New Plants

January always brings a feeling of excitement and anticipation here at the greenhouses.  We are quick to get to work, planting thousands of plants and baskets each week from now until mid-May. Come out to see all the tiny little starts filling up the greenhouses each week.  It is always amazing how quickly it changes.

Southern Oregon has the benefit of a few days of sunny weather even in January that allows us to get out into our gardens.  Take advantage of this to get in your primroses, pansies, and perennials for a jump on spring.  Our pansies, primroses, and perennials are acclimated to the outdoor temperatures so they are fine to be planted immediately, however you’ll want to pay close attention to watering needs. For the best success when planting during January you will want to make sure the plants don’t get stressed.   Plants do not typically take up as much water during the winter but you will also want to watch them so that they don’t get too dry and dehydrated.

Some new varieties of perennials we have this year include:

  • Achillea ‘Tutti Frutti Pink Grapefruit’
  • Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’
  • Doronicum ‘Little Leo’
  • Erysimum ‘WinterTM Sorbet’
  • Erysimum ‘WinterTM Sun’
  • Helenium ‘Mardi Gras’
  • Lobelia ‘Starship Scarlet’
  • Nepeta ‘Catnip’
  • Salvia ‘ Rose Marvel’
  • Scabiosa ‘FlutterTM  Rose Pink’

We have quite a few more new perennial varieties not listed above that are becoming available each week. We’ll also have a plethora of new annuals, basket combos, grasses, and more.

We are closed until Jan 15th when we will re-open for business Monday-Friday 9am-4pm.

Happy Gardening!
