Upcoming exciting events at Northwest Nature Shop
Spring is almost here and we at The Northwest Nature Shop have many great classes, workshops, and hikes lined up for the upcoming months. We consider ourselves more than a special shop to find hiking guides and maps, gifts to beautify your home and garden, eco-friendly products for home and travel and incredible toys that have long lasting play value. We also aim to cultivate a community that values and protects our natural environment. Throughout the year, The Northwest Nature Shop offers classes, field trips and presentations given by experienced birders, writers and naturalists. We invite those just beginning to discover the natural world as well as the life-long avid nature enthusiasts to come into the Northwest Nature Shop and see what events we have coming up.
Get into Birds! Bird Walk to Ashland Pond
March 8th 8 am – Free
Birds have a unique ability to inspire and delight us. They connect us with nature, with the passage of seasons, and with each other. Bird-watching has become the most popular outdoor activity in the US with an estimated 50 to 80 million participants. There’s a wonderful world just waiting to be explored, so get into birds!
Join Northwest Nature Shop as we visit Ashland Pond, an Ashland birding hotspot. Waterfowl, raptors, and possible river otter and beaver sightings will round out the morning. Expect about 2 miles of walking on gentle paths. Please bring binoculars if you have them and look forward to an enjoyable excursion into the wonderful world of birds!
Growing Mushrooms at Home! Hands-on mushroom cultivation workshop
March 8th 11 am – $15/participant
Learn the joy of growing your own mushrooms! This beginner level workshop on Saturday, March 8th at 11 am is for those interested in small-scale forest mushroom cultivation. Participants will learn about forest fungi and outdoor mushroom cultivation on logs. We will also discuss laying yard considerations, various inoculation methods, and participants will inoculate two shiitake* bolts to take home. Logs can be expected to produce crops of mushrooms for 3-4 years. All necessary materials provided, please bring your own work gloves and water bottle. Sign up today at the Northwest Nature Shop, as class size is limited to 14 participants.
*Mushroom spawn will be provided by local Myriad Mycology in Talent, OR
Build your own bird house!
March 15th 11 am – $5 donation to Siskiyou Audubon
Spring is the perfect time to build a birdhouse. Birds are a valuable resource for gardeners, birdwatchers and farmers, aiding in insect control and pollination of plant varieties. The Northwest Nature Shop will offer a build your own birdhouse class on Saturday March 15th at 11 am. Lee Web, local wildlife biologist, will lead the class in building a birdhouse and have some fun facts about birds. This is a family-friendly project that includes hammering, and drilling. Please bring a hammer from home to the class.
