Improving Lung Function in COVID Times

Healthy lungs are controlled by rib cage mobility, diaphragm function, and our ability to efficiently move air in and out. The ability to properly fill our lungs and exhale fully are dramatically affected by our posture and mobility. Common postural patterns of the chest wall influence lung function. Essentially, when our posture is optimized and we move in ways that support the position of the rib cage and diaphragm we breathe well. It’s also important to note that when the rib cage is inflexible, it is harder to stave off infection. While COVID remains a health concern in our community, it’s important to do all we can to keep our lungs healthy.

The way we hold our posture can limit our lungs’ ability to exchange air efficiently. These lung patterns are reinforced by our postural alignment. Activities that support good diaphragm position and repattern the chest wall can retrain the lungs. The mechanics we put our bodies through every day have the capacity to give our lungs power or limit their ability to give us enough air. From a postural alignment perspective, the goal is to maximize the function of the lungs through improved mobility.

So, what can we do? I’ve put together a video that demonstrates simple exercises that open the fascia behind your heart, reposition your ribs, and get your air out to facilitate core strength and optimize the mechanics of breathing. Check out my YouTube channel to take a look. I also have several online Zoom classes designed to address breathing mechanics and core strengthening. You can find more information about these free resources on my website https://themovementstudio.net/.
