Summer with Ashland Parks & Rec
The 2014 Ashland Parks & Recreation Summer Guide is here! If you haven’t already seen yours in the mail, give us a call at 541.488.5340 or stop by our office in Lithia Park at 340 S Pioneer St (off Granite St in upper Lithia Park). Programs in the summer guide run May through the end of August. Learn more about our summer programs via our online guide at www.ashland.or.us/RecGuide.
The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. on the Calle Guanajuato, near the Ashland Creek Bridge, to celebrate recent renovations to the Calle. This popular corridor is located at 21 Winburn Way, behind shops and restaurants in Ashland’s downtown Plaza. This free event is open to everyone. Enjoy live entertainment from Sweet Talk, performing traditional Mexican songs; dance performances by Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre, a traditional, youth Mexican folk dance troupe; and samplings from some of your favorite Calle restaurants. Learn more about the Calle, the festivities and read the 2013 Archeological report at www.ashland.or.us/Calle.
The Daniel Meyer Pool will open on June 12. Registration for swim lessons will take place at the pool on the 12th, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (with free onsite testing/placement for swim lessons; please remember that testing is required for all new swim lesson participants). The pool is located at 1705 Homes Ave in Ashland (off Walker St, between E. Main and Ashland St). It is a seasonal outdoor facility open mid-June to early September. We offer Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI)® swim lessons, private lessons, swim team camps, and Starguard® lifeguard certification, open and lap swim, aerobics and CrossFit®, plus more! You can check out all of our programs and the 2014 calendar at www.ashland.or.us/Swim, or contact the pool directly at 541.488.0313.
If you can’t make it to any tropical islands this summer, then come and join us for “Island Night: An Aloha State of Mind” on Saturday, July 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Daniel Meyer Pool. We will have Hawaiian music and dancing and fun activities for all ages! There will be a free community hula dance workshop for anyone wanting to learn the beautiful moves of Hawaiian dance.
