Play It Safe
Sexual health tools and toys can be a great way to enjoy your body, but with so many unregulated products available it’s necessary to know which materials are, and are not, body-safe. Some contain chemicals that leach out into the body while other products are covered with microscopic pores that can harbor bacteria.
Fortunately, with some basic knowledge and discernment, you can shop with confidence that you will find the perfect product to give you the most pleasure without risk to your safety. To be clear, Love Revolution will never carry toxic toys EVER!
You can’t always tell what an item is made of just by looking at it. For example, some contain phthalates that are xenoestrogenic – meaning they are precursors to estrogenic hormone compounds. Phthalates are plastic softeners linked to birth defects and cancer. They are banned from baby toys but not grown-up toys. Yet, public demand keeps growing and today many companies have stopped using them — but some still do. Because the industry is largely unregulated, products that specifically claim to be phthalate-free may not actually be so.
“Jelly” toys can contain softeners that are known toxins including toluene, cyclohexanone or oil from petroleum. Also, if your favorite toy has a lingering chemical odor you might want to toss it out or use it safely by covering with a condom.
Pores are tiny crater-like pockets in the surface that allow microorganisms a place to hide. These toys are impossible to get 100% clean and should not be shared. Again, using a condom over the toy will bring you safe play.
One of the best ways to avoid the bad stuff is to purchase products that are made of silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel or ABS plastic, which are stable, non-porous and durable.
When you shop for your personal pleasure, be sure to buy from a safe, verifiable source with knowledgeable staff and products that are vetted for your protection. If you have questions about what you need both for pleasure and safety, we encourage you to come in to Love Revolution and we’ll be happy to help.
