Fall Is Upon Us at the Greenhouses

Here at Ashland Greenhouses, we are excited to announce that fall inventory is in full swing. We have plenty of options for both your veggie and flower garden beds. Pansies, violas, and chrysanthemums just to name a few. This month’s newsletter covers some fall gardening prep work, and ideas about what to plant in your favorite beds to keep color throughout the fall and winter.

Fall Garden Prep Work: This is the time of year to gather all of your compost, and think about what your garden beds need to thrive next spring. Thinking ahead in the fall makes it to where you won’t have to amend your beds much next year, if any at all. Who wants to worry about their soil health when it’s time to plant their spring favorites? Did you know that you can compost not just your garden plant matter, but cardboard, and wood scraps? Mounding these materials to let them “steep” is called hügelkultur, and is becoming more and more popular for organic gardening. This method makes a great home for worms and beneficial microorganisms to thrive, creating delicious soil for your plants once the mounds break down. Just some food for thought, or rather, food for your plants!

Pansies: These adorable and vibrant annuals make the perfect addition to your garden spaces. Not only are they hardy in the cool weather, but I’ve even seen them stay strong in the winter snow! For being such a delicate looking flower, they sure do seem to be capable of withstanding the cold weather.

Violas: We love violas because they are just as resilient as a pansy. However, these are a little smaller, and oh so cute! These also are known to self-seed, which is just another fabulous benefit for those gardeners who like volunteer plants.

Chrysanthemums: I don’t know about you, but I love mums! Not only do they come in bright colors which liven up any garden space, but they also are full of blooms, and don’t stop until their growing season ends. These are perennial, and come back year after year. If you fully cut them back once they are done, they will start growing again the next season for fall.

With all this being said, don’t skip out on coming to visit our store to see these beautiful plants. As always feel free to chat with one of our team members about your fall gardening questions. We are happy to help! Hope to see you soon.
