Summer Continues to Bring the Heat!
Here at Ashland Greenhouses, we know the hardships of summer heat. In this article I wanted to give you some ideas on what plants will do well in your gardens during the summer, as well as make some suggestions on how to keep your plants happy even in this scorching weather.
Summer Tips – Water, water, and more water! You may find some of your plants, especially ones in pots, need watered twice a day to keep from wilting. As any gardener knows, morning is always the best time to water, but if you need to water twice, do your second round in the evening as soon as it starts to cool down after the heat of the day. Be sure there is enough time for the foliage and flowers to mostly dry before it gets too late in the evening to avoid powdery mildew and molds. Also, try to avoid watering overhead especially if watering in the evening. This is always a general rule of thumb for happier plants, but is even more important for evening watering. Get your hose close to the soil to give them a good drink without getting too much of the plant wet.
Summer Plants – We have many great summer tolerant plants who continue to bloom, or put on one heck of a show when they are ready! As a consolation prize, these plants will come back year after year.

Sedum is a fun and bright addition to any yard with a succulent type feel that is also a perennial, and thrives outside in this summer heat. We have sedum in Plum Dazzled, Autumn Fire, and Wildfire. Keep that summer sizzle going in your garden this year.
Gaillardia is a beautiful perennial bloomer, with flowers a plenty! Keep it dead headed so you get more and more all summer. We have these in Gallons or 4.5” pots so you can choose the size you want for your space. They are available in Red Shades or Arizona Sun.
