October Brings Even More Fall Feels

Ashland Greenhouses is changing it up with some new fall plants this year! We have a great selection of new plants, and as always still grow the staples for your favorite garden pots, and veggie beds. Take a look below to learn about our frost tolerant lovelies for your garden. Oh, and don’t forget to read about our season specific gardening tips.

Ajuga: This lovely little ground cover has striking white, purple, rose, and green leaves that change into deep bronze in the fall. Not only is it a frost tolerant perennial, but it blooms lovely blue flowers in the spring. You can put this plant in the shade or sun! Get this beautiful plant established in your beds now for a lovely display this spring and into summer.

Brunnera: Brunnera ‘Sea Heart,’ also known as Bugloss, is a stunning silver with intricate green lacy veins and green borders. This plant is also frost tolerant, and hardy even though it looks so delicate. Once spring rolls around you get to see a lovely display of pink/blue flowers. This baby likes part shade to full shade, so don’t accidently put it in full sun…

Cool Weather Veggies: We offer a great selection of cool weather veggies. Lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cilantro, onions, and more. Did you know: You can winter over your onions? I did it last year, and the return was awesome! Just be sure that once spring comes around you cut their flowers when they start to grow. If you skip one, that onion might be a tad mushy when you harvest it… Whoops…

Preparing for Winter in October: Remember last month when we talked about Hügelkultur? Did you perform some research because you found it as interesting as I do? October is still a great month to continue utilizing this gardening knowledge. The best part is once you spread out your compost you just let it sit until next year! To those gardeners who like pots, now is a good time to start thinking about the best practice to winter them over. If you don’t have a greenhouse, inside your garage or in an enclosed porch are just a couple ideas for when the weather turns. You can also use a frost cloth for those pots that are too large to be moved.

If you feel so inclined, post your favorite Ashland Greenhouse plants in your gardens! We love to see them on our Facebook or Instagram, and love to hear about your gardening successes. We look forward to seeing them.
