Where did the season go? It feels like I was just planting my summer vegetables and struggling to keep things alive during those challenging heat waves. November quietly slid in with cooler days and chilly nights with the promise of a beautiful fall and hopefully an amazing winter. With my garden spaces and containers ending their season it’s time to start “tucking” away and putting to “bed” certain perennials, cleaning out tired overgrown annuals and getting prepared for the colder months ahead.
November is when I clean my garden tools, drain hoses that I won’t be using, take inventory of my bagged soils, fertilizers, seeds, and pest control products. I make notes on what did great this season, what didn’t, and if I need to consider planting certain plants in different areas due to issues with water or heat and sun exposure. I clean/cut back any perennials that I let go a bit longer and tag their locations before I do my winter mulching. I move any pots or containers that may get flooded by the rain or freeze and crack, and move any with tender perennials in them up against my house for more protection. It’s a good idea to make sure you have frost cloth for any plants that might need a bit of protection during the cold freezing months.
Next to spring this is my favorite time at the Greenhouses. Our incredible Poinsettias are showing off their gorgeous colors as we get ready for our Poinsettia Festival. This year our festival is on November 30th, the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Santa will be stopping in for photos and to pass out gifts from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Our vendors are excited to see you all and there will be snacks, beverages, and a food truck or two. This is the perfect event to bring your family and friends that are visiting for Thanksgiving!
You don’t need to wait for the festival to see the magic happening, we are open Monday-Friday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. We have Christmas Cactus, Cyclamen, Ornamental Peppers, and Succulents available as well as our fun metal garden art.
